He attended elementary school in Funtua, per the old educational system where students spent four years in elementary school before proceeding to middle school for three years. Mutallab was part of the last set of students to go through the traditional college system, from form one to six, at Government College, Zaria (now known as Barewa College).
At Government College, Zaria, Mutallab had the opportunity to meet students from different parts of the country, as the college represented the 19 Northern states of Nigeria. This exposure allowed him to interact with individuals from various communities, helping him to understand different cultures and religions. After completing his secondary education, Mutallab obtained a Cambridge Certificate, signifying his success in the exams.
He then began his career as a clerk at PKF, an international firm of chartered accountants in Kaduna, Nigeria. After spending one year there, Mutallab was asked to proceed to the Achimota College of Business Administration, a business school, where he spent one year. However, the government of Northern Nigeria requested that Mutallab and his fellow Northern Nigerian students return to Nigeria and continue their education in the United Kingdom (UK) due to socialist tendencies in Ghana, where Achimota College was located.
Mutallab and his colleagues then enrolled in South-West College of London, where he completed a three-year Accountancy training program and passed. Following his training, Mutallab gained valuable work experience in accounting, taxation, and various management aspects while working for Fuller Jenks Beecroft & Company in London for 18 months.
He was subsequently recruited by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), an arm of the Ministry of Defence responsible for producing military weaponry. At DICON, Mutallab headed the finance department and gained insight into the workings of the military government. He spent approximately three years at DICON before being recruited by the Northern Nigerian Development Corporation (NNDC), an investment company focused on attracting investors to Nigeria.
Mutallab’s initial career choice was to become an engineer. However, a mentor and friend —Hamza Zayyad, who was working in Lagos in the PKF firm, convinced him to pursue a career in accountancy due to its wide-ranging nature. Mutallab spent a week with Zayyad in Lagos, which solidified his decision to pursue accountancy. As a result, he abandoned his engineering aspirations and pursued accountancy, a decision he has never regretted.
Mutallab found the profession fascinating, as it encompasses various fields such as business management, taxation, company loans, and economics, providing him with a versatile skill set that has been useful in his subsequent roles, including working in the banking sector. Mutallab appreciates the opportunity to study and work in the field of accountancy, which has enriched his career and broadened his understanding of various aspects of management and finance.
